Community Comes Together to Spruce-Up Local School

by Diana Pando

On Saturday, April 22nd, The Resurrection Project (TRP), in partnership with Comcast, joined forces to beautify the Richard J. Daley Elementary Academy in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. The effort was part of the annual Comcast Cares Day that takes place across the country.

Every year, Comcast Cares Day celebrates the company’s year-round commitment to service, which has grown to become the nation’s largest single-day corporate volunteer event. The volunteers help improve parks, schools, beaches, senior centers, and other vital community sites. This year, TRP staff and volunteers were happy to be part of the efforts in Back of the Yards.

There were over 180 volunteers that came out on a beautiful Saturday morning to take part in the spruce-up efforts for Daley Elementary. The projects included: painting the second floor hallway, creating murals throughout the school and stairways, and doing spring-cleaning activities.

“Our participation in Comcast Cares Day is part of our mission to deepen our commitment to the Back of the Yards community,” said Luis Bermudez, TRP’s Director of Neighborhood Collaborations and Partnerships. “The result is a cleaner and more beautiful school that creates a better learning environment for our children.”

The following Monday, students at Richard J. Daley Elementary Academy arrived to find freshly painted walls, murals, flowers planted outside, and a clean school that they could be proud of and enjoy during their school day.
