MALDEF Awards honors TRP for advancing Latino community
by Elizabeth Vivas
On June 3, 2015, Raul Raymundo and The Resurrection Project were honored for their work in Chicago’s underserved neighborhoods. MALDEF’s 2015 Chicago Awards Gala was held at the Hyatt Regency Chicago and attended by hundreds of Chicago’s most prominent Latino leaders. MALDEF and its supporters work passionately righting the wrongs for Latinos that would otherwise be unjustly ignored.
Raymundo and The Resurrection Project received the Excellence in Community Service Award for his vigorous leadership.
Under Raymundo’s direction, TRP has become a cornerstone in community development efforts in the Chicago metropolitan region. Through his leadership, TRP has been able to seamlessly blend community development, community organizing, and advocacy with human service delivery to build vibrant, healthier, and involved communities.
Raymundo shared this honor with Cecelia Abundi, Assistant Attorney General and Maria Socorro Pesqueira, President and CEO of Mujeres Latinas en Acciόn. Master of Ceremonies Enrique Rodriguez of Univision, kept the energy high through his interactive engagement of the crowd.
The highlight of the evening was the award presentation, echoed by a powerful charge to action given by Thomas Saenz, President and General Counsel of MALDEF. His remarks, inspired by the spirit and efforts the incredible honorees, encouraged attendees to advance the work being done in Chicago and around the nation to combat anti-immigrant local and state laws and increase protections of the right to vote.
