TRP in the news

The Resurrection Project continues to make the rounds in the news. The Chicago Tribune ran an article on our work with the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) and Proviso Township Mental Health Commission to acquire foreclosed homes and convert them into quality, affordable housing through the Neighborhood Stabilization Program. We were proud to serve as both the housing developer and housing counseling agency in this initiative. You can read the article here.

A Young Couple Realize their Dream of Becoming Homeowners

Resurrection Basketball League Celebrates its 12th Season

by Jeanette Galicia - New Communities Program Organizer Published: June 17, 2010 In 1999, TRP created the Resurrection Basketball League (RBL), a Friday night youth sports league, to give young people positive recreational alternatives on a Friday. In collaboration with the Chicago Police Department and other community based and civic organizations, RBL takes as many as 60 youth ages  7-18 out every Friday evening from June to August to play basketball in different blocks throughout Pilsen.

274 families served at Chicago's Home Rescue Fair

by Alex Morales Published: May 13, 2010 On Saturday May  8th, The Resurrection Project  hosted a Home Rescue Fair in partnership with the Alliance for Stabilizing Our Communities  and with support from Bank of America . The event took place at Benito Juarez High School  in Pilsen and received the attention of local press, TV and radio.  The Chicago Home Rescue fair served 274 families by providing H.U.D. certified financial counseling, free legal advice, and loan modifications for those whose lenders were in attendance.  Lenders such as Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Charter One, Indy Mac,  and Chase, among others, were  present to consult  with clients.

TRP goes to Washington DC to march for comprehensive immigration…

by Alex Morales Published: March 29, 2010 As part of an effort to remind President Obama and legislators of promises to overhaul immigration policy, on Sunday March 21st, over 200,000 people rallied at the National Mall to build momentum for fair and comprehensive immigration reform. The Resurrection Project helped organize busses volunteers, clients and community members and parishioners to travel to the capitol in support of hard working immigrant families urging President Obama to act on his vows from the campaign trail.

TRP and Pilsen Planning Committee win The Chicago Community Trust…

by Alex Morales Published: February 10, 2010 On Tuesday, February 10, The Resurrection Project and Pilsen Planning Committee were awarded The Chicago Community Trust Outstanding Community Strategy of the Year award at LISC/Chicago’s 16th Annual Chicago Neighborhood Development Awards (CNDA) ceremony.  The CNDA praises innovative community development and planning designed to improve the quality of life of our communities in an event held at the Hyatt Regency Chicago; hundreds of professionals from the private and public sectors, community developers and public officials braved the snowstorm to be in attendance.

Families Helped by TRP Share Their Experiences

Casa Maravilla: TRP's Newest Affordable Senior Housing to Open in…

Published: January 19, 2010 On May 2010 The Resurrection Project will open Casa Maravilla, an environmentally friendly senior housing building located north of Alivio Medical Center in Pilsen. Casa Maravilla will accommodate adults 55 years and over by providing studio, one and two bedroom apartments at affordable monthly rates starting at $350 for a studio and going up to $900 for a spacious 2 bedroom apartment.

Cardinal George Announces $500,000 Investment by The Archdiocese of Chicago…

Published: November 23, 2009 On Monday November 23, 2009 the Archdiocese of Chicago held a press conference at The Resurrection Project’s newest residential building, Casa Morelos, to announce the Archdiocese of Chicago’s investment in affordable housing initiatives on Chicago’s southwest side.  Cardinal Francis George declared the formation of a new partnership between The Resurrection Project TRP and the Archdiocese, in which the Archdiocese has allocated $500,000 dollars to TRP which will allow the organization to continue to provide opportunities for hard working families to find safe and affordable housing. This initial investment by the Archdiocese will provide additional capital to assist in the development, construction, marketing, and promotion of affordable housing units being built by The Resurrection Project for low-to-moderate income families and individuals.  ABC News, Univision and WGN News were there to cover the event.

Inspiring Families to Learn with Elev8!

Published: October 15, 2009 Elev8, an initiative designed to integrate new services locally at the Pilsen neighborhood elementary school Orozco Community Academy, has successfully engaged students and their families in a wide variety of educational opportunities ranging from computer training to health classes. During its first year, thirty Orozco parents took advantage of the opportunities, and this number continues to grow as Elev8 popularity grows. “Response has been very positive as parents seized the opportunities available, took advantage of the programs and learned new valuable skills, which have improved their living” shared Luis Bermudez, Elev8 Site Director. “Elev8 parents learn new skills, they can make the leap to use a computer, to eventually use email and the internet, and perhaps, increase their earning potential.”
