Department Description:
The goal of TRP’s Immigrant Justice Department is to provide opportunities for authentic local immigrant leadership, to offer holistic community-based immigration legal services, and to work in coalitions to expand access to legal representation. The Immigrant Justice Legal Clinic offers direct legal services while engaging clients in advocacy and education, and provides resources to help the community prepare for changes in immigration policy.
GeneralJob Description:
The Senior Attorney’s primary function is to serve as lead trainer and curriculum designer for TRP’s immigration legal trainings and technical assistance. The Senior Attorney will play a key role in developing the immigration legal services ecosystem in Illinois, with the ultimate goal of ensuring every Illinois immigrant has access to free, high-quality legal services and information.
Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as lead legal trainer and curriculum designer for TRP’s immigration legal trainings and technical assistance programs;
- Design, develop, and implement legal training curriculum aligned with policy changes, community needs, and organizational goals;
- In collaboration with the Capacity Building and Community Education teams, prepare, coordinate, and deliver in-person and virtual trainings to legal practitioners from TRP and partner organizations, community navigators, and the general public;
- Provide training and technical assistance to attorneys participating in the Illinois Attorney Panel Program;
- Provide mentorship such as co-counseling opportunities for TRP legal reps, partner organizations, and panel attorneys;
- Lead strategy and evaluation of the legal training & TA program, providing recommendations and uplifting successes both internally and externally;
- Develop Requests for Proposals (RFPs), coordinate vendor contracting process, including the execution of Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs), and collect and process periodic invoices for legal training & technical assistance partners;
- Support Community Education team in providing legal review and feedback on public-facing material development, including training materials, social media graphics, one-pagers, etc. in response to policy or program updates;
- Engage frequently in strategic thinking, particularly as it relates to the development of the capacity-building programs, and provide recommendations as needed;
- Develop and maintain strategic community partnerships with other community-based organizations, government agencies, foundations, elected officials, and other stakeholders
- Lead in program evaluation and data collection around program deliverables, including developing reporting templates and preparing periodic reports to funders
- Work with Immigrant Justice and Communications teams to respond to media inquiries as a legal expert.

- Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications and Skills:
- Minimum of 4 years of experience working in immigration legal services or immigrant advocacy groups;
- JD and licensed, with nonprofit immigration legal and removal defense experience required;
- Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred;
- Demonstrated leadership in the legal services sector or immigrant rights organizations;
- Demonstrated ability to work in partnership with residents, local leaders, and all nonprofits to strengthen and advance multiple aspects of legal services programs;
- Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to listen well, convey thoughts clearly, speak in public, and work effectively as a member of a team;
- Excellent analytical, writing, and organization skills with the ability to work well under pressure, multi-task, and meet established timelines and goals;
- Demonstrated skills in facilitation, relationship building, and collaborative planning;
- Ability to communicate thoughts and ideas effectively and to effectively interpret general policy, criteria, and procedures for specific situations as it relates to immigration legal services and/or removal defense;
- Technical skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and proficiency with data systems and government grant reporting;
- Ability to deal effectively and professionally in stressful situations and with a high volume of public and professional inquiries while exhibiting sound judgment and using discretion;
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work effectively with people of diverse social, faith, economic, and racial/ethnic backgrounds.
Special Working Conditions and Demands:
- On-site work schedule as needed, and no less than 3 days per week.
- Willingness to work flexible hours; some evenings and weekends required.
- Access to a car, valid driver’s license and insurance, and ability to travel throughout the state.
