by Ulises Silva Run-down. Often-troubled. Unsafe. These are words often used to describe the Back of the Yards neighborhood in the southwest side of Chicago. But 23 years ago, the same words were used to describe Pilsen. Watch our five-year anniversary video for a glimpse of what Pilsen once looked like. Listen to the words used to describe it. Run-down. Often-troubled. Unsafe. These are words at odds with how Pilsen is described today.

TRP and its partners help bring a historic voter turnout…

TRP has always believed that a civically engaged populace is vital to creating a healthy community. That’s why we joined a coalition for a Get Out the Vote campaign that focused on increasing voter registration in Back of the Yards. Historically, Back of the Yards has had some of the lowest voter turnouts in the city. TRP and its partners, however, successful registered more than 30,000 new voters.

For two families, buying a home through TRP is more…

by Ulises Silva In the past few months, TRP has helped many people achieve the dream of home ownership. For two families in particular, buying a home meant so much more than signing on a dotted line. Emeterio and Karyk Padilla are a young couple who’ve lived in Chicago for 10 years. For Emeterio, home ownership was a dream he didn’t think he could pursue. “I never thought I could afford to by a house,” Emeterio says. “I was young and I was afraid to see what my credit was.” But after hearing about TRP’s home purchase program at a mass at San Miguel church, the Padillas signed up for TRP’s trolley tour of our new NSP2 properties for sale and saw a home they wanted to buy. So they signed up for TRP’s free financial wellness classes to better position themselves for home ownership. “Thanks to TRP,” Emeterio says, “we educated ourselves on the home buying process.”

TRP joins partner organizations and local families for Family Unity…

by Diana Hinojosa On Thursday, January 24, The Resurrection Project (TRP) hosted its third annual Family Unity Night at Dvorak Park in Pilsen. Despite the bitter-cold weather, this highly anticipated community event drew a lively crowd. True to its mission, TRP worked in collaboration with other community organizations such as Instituto del Progreso Latino and Mujeres Latinas en Acción to organize a convivio, or social gathering, that would serve as a Mecca of information regarding free services to community members that need them most. Dovark Park’s Field House was buzzing with Pilsen families as they enjoyed games, delicious food from Fogota Village, and a raffle that featured prizes promoting reading and exercise. Parents’ laps were piled with pamphlets of information as they mingled with other mothers and fathers. The children were happy to make new friends and play in a warm and inviting setting that brimmed with the spirit of community.
