Video: 23 Days in ICE Detention: A story of separation, resilience, and reunification.

by: Hanna Guerrero
January 13, 2026 – In September, the Department of Homeland Security launched its aggressive immigration enforcement campaign in Chicago called “Operation Midway Blitz.” A client of The Resurrection Project’s Immigrant Justice program, who opted to remain anonymous, bravely shared his story after being detained for 23 days during the operation. At the time of his arrest, he was lawfully pursuing a green card and had no criminal record.
The client recalls a harrowing time in detention, describing the inhumane and unsanitary conditions he endured. Back at home, his family and community rallied for his release. A landscaper by trade, the client also spent his free time helping senior neighbors with their yards—and when he was detained, his neighbors noticed. His detention disrupted not just his own life, but the lives of those who relied on his kindness. And through it all, the love he holds for his wife, Efi, became his lifeline as a source of strength that carried him through the darkest moments.
His story is a powerful reminder that when one person is detained, the harm ripples far beyond detention walls. Every day, our Immigrant Justice team aims to repair this harm through fair legal representation and tireless advocacy. At TRP, we remain committed to standing with immigrant families, championing justice, and ensuring no one is forced to face this system alone.
Whether you’re an immigrant or an ally, knowing your rights helps keep you and your loved ones safe if you encounter immigration agents or face detention. To support our work please donate to The Resurrection Project.
