On Tuesday, September 28^th community leaders, public servants and neighbors celebrated the official inauguration of TRP’s newest project, Casa Maravilla in a ceremony held the facilities located at 2021 S. Morgan Street, Chicago, IL, 60608.  Casa Maravilla provides 73 units of high-quality affordable rental housing to Chicagoland seniors. Honored guests included State Representative Edward Acevedo, State Senator Antonio Munoz and Alderman for the 25^th Ward Daniel Solis.
Casa Maravilla’s location directly north of Alivio Medical Center will provide tenants with quick and convenient access to medical care.  Casa Maravilla will also offer exciting opportunities beyond housing for older adults in the community with the opening of a City of Chicago Department of Family and Support Services Senior Satellite Center on the first floor of the building. The Senior Satellite Center will host health education, exercise classes, speakers and group field trips for tenants and surrounding neighbors 55 years and over. Seniors will also take advantage of the Golden Diners Program, which serves hot nutritious meals for adults age 60 and over. The Golden Diners program provides another opportunity for community members to meet and build relationships with their neighbors.  “We are delighted to live in such a beautiful building, that is affordable and close to work” said Mr. and Mrs. Peña-Hernandez.  Mr. Peña-Hernandez is a tailor on 18th Street.
Casa Maravilla includes 73 studio, one- and two- bedroom apartments and features a variety of green building technologies including pervious paving to decrease run-off and a partial green rooftop system reducing energy consumption and water entering the storm sewers.  Casa Maravilla is also one of Chicago’s first residential buildings and low income housing tax credit buildings to utilize an innovative and environmentally-friendly geothermal heating system, which draw’s on the earth’s natural heat to both warm and cool the building, dramatically reducing energy costs.
The Resurrection Project’s Casa Maravilla was made possible thanks to the partnerships with financing institutions such as US Bank, the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA), the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), National Equity Fund (NEF), and the City of Chicago Department of Community.
“Our seniors deserve the best, and so many of them have been living in deteriorating conditions and suffer from increasing rents, economic hardship due to the recession and fixed incomes, and isolation” said Guacolda Reyes, Deputy Director at The Resurrection Project “TRP is proud of Casa Maravilla; our first affordable rental housing for seniors – a cozy place where seniors can live the Golden Years with dignity.”
