May 14, 2026 – At 92 years old, Alice Watkins has built a life defined by resilience, routine, and community. For more than 30 years, she has called Casa Heritage, The Resurrection Project\u2019s (TRP) affordable housing development in Melrose Park, home.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The 142-unit complex consists of seven two-story buildings and offers a mix of studio and one-bedroom apartments. Ms. Alice\u2019s second-floor studio serves as her home base as she continues to live and thrive alongside her Casa Heritage community. She enjoys \u201cgetting her steps in\u201d by taking walks outside, and when she\u2019s at home, she likes watching game shows and court TV. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Ms. Alice moved to Illinois from Tennessee and, with the help of her niece, found Casa Heritage. What began as a search for a place to live became a life rooted in community, where she could live out her golden years.     <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Small Acts of Care<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Over the decades, she has watched property managers come and go. But with her current property manager, Jorge Camacho Jr., Ms. Alice has formed a bond that goes beyond routine maintenance requests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Their relationship is built on small but meaningful acts of care. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI like checking in with Ms. Alice,\u201d said Jorge. \u201cI\u2019ll be coming in, and she\u2019ll already be outside her door, ready. I\u2019ll say, \u2018Good morning, Ms. Alice. How are you?\u2019 She\u2019s like, \u2018I\u2019m good, can you do me a little favor?\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

For Ms. Alice, those small favors can make all the difference. Jorge helps her collect her mail, takes out her garbage, and assists her as she carefully walks down the stairs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI like that I\u2019m able to help her out when she needs help. Ms. Alice knows she can come to me and ask me for anything.\u201d

Their friendship began with a simple knock at the door two summers ago. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Jorge introduced himself as the new property manager for Casa Heritage, and he explained he was checking in to make sure her air conditioning was on and working properly. From that simple check-in, a relationship built on trust and care soon blossomed.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms. Alice has been a resident of Casa Heritage for 34 years. <\/em> <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

As time has gone on, Ms. Alice\u2019s niece has been able to \u201cstep in a little bit more\u201d to help her, but when her niece isn\u2019t around, Ms. Alice knows she can lean on Jorge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Ms. Alice describes Jorge simply: \u201cHe\u2019s the best.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Ms. Alice has no plans to move out of Casa Heritage despite her niece\u2019s offering to move her into her mother\u2019s house. Ms. Alice fondly describes living at Casa Heritage as \u201cserenity.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are good people here. It\u2019s not noisy, it\u2019s a quiet place. It\u2019s good is what I\u2019m saying. That\u2019s why I\u2019ve been here 34 years and counting.\u00bb<\/p>Ms. Alice<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Community, Celebration, and Care<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Ms. Alice has a community around her. Neighbors, staff, and her niece form a circle of support that keeps her from ever feeling truly alone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Last year, her neighbors surprised her with a birthday celebration in the community room. They gathered, sang \u201cHappy Birthday,\u201d and made sure she was celebrated. She still keeps the balloons from her 92nd birthday on her wall.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Ms. Alice also talks about how her niece helped clean her apartment, making sure everything felt fresh and in order. Afterward, she called Jorge and invited him to \u201ccome check out the house,\u201d proud to share the moment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

These little moments of neighbors in a community room, staff checking AC units in the summer, and balloons taped to the wall are the everyday expressions of what it means to love where you live. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quiet Blessings and Deep Gratitude <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Jorge enjoys helping Ms. Alice with everyday tasks, from assisting her down the stairs to taking out her trash. <\/em><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Ms. Alice\u2019s life at Casa Heritage is also grounded in faith. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

She mentions her health challenges and gestures to the Life Alert device that is around her neck in case she falls. Through it all, she says simply and confidently: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGod always picks me up. Yeah, always.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

For her, the story of Casa Heritage is not just about brick and mortar or leases and units. It has been a place to age with dignity, independence, and the comfort of knowing someone is always nearby to lend a helping hand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms. Alice\u2019s story serves as a shining example of what happens when residents are not just housed, but seen, supported, and celebrated. That sense of home\u2014rooted in community and healthy relationships\u2014is what TRP strives for with every one of our residents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
