She\u00a0felt terrified and alone\u2014until\u00a0multiple\u00a0communities stepped in to help her.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Maria recalls the day she was detained&nbsp;as an ordinary&nbsp;one.&nbsp;She had&nbsp;worked several&nbsp;different manual labor&nbsp;jobs,&nbsp;from janitorial&nbsp;work&nbsp;to painting houses.&nbsp;On that&nbsp;October day,&nbsp;Maria&nbsp;was standing outside a Home Depot&nbsp;looking for work&nbsp;when,&nbsp;seemingly out&nbsp;of nowhere,&nbsp;a white SUV pulled up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSome men got out,&nbsp;and I got scared. I tried to leave, but one of them managed to grab me.&nbsp;&nbsp;He asked me where I was going, and honestly, my reaction in that moment was to feel afraid because I really thought, \u2018This is a kidnapping, they\u2019re kidnapping me or something,\u2019 so that\u2019s when they started asking me questions. I only answered, \u2018I want a lawyer, I want a lawyer.\u2019 They responded, \u2018We are from ICE. If you&nbsp;don\u2019t&nbsp;talk, things can go badly for you,\u201d&nbsp;Maria recalled.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Maria was convinced\u00a0the\u00a0ICE agents\u00a0were kidnappers because they were masked. They also kept insisting she was a \u201cbad person,\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0she\u00a0thought they had mistaken her for someone else. Amid\u00a0confusion\u00a0and\u00a0terror,\u00a0she\u00a0managed to\u00a0remember her rights. She\u00a0would only respond to their questions by\u00a0asking\u00a0for\u00a0a lawyer or\u00a0remaining\u00a0silent.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">With&nbsp;Maria in the&nbsp;SUV,&nbsp;the&nbsp;agents&nbsp;drove around for hours, leading to more confusion and&nbsp;alarm.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI thought that when [ICE] grabbed you,&nbsp;it was more like a process where they would take you straight to the place, but they stayed there, like, stopped for about three, four hours&nbsp;&#8230;&nbsp;it was a long time until they took us somewhere else,\u201d&nbsp;Maria said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-from-broadview-to-kentucky\">From Broadview to Kentucky<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Maria finally arrived at the Broadview processing center. She was quickly processed and transported to a detention center in Kentucky. She was able to call a friend in Chicago and let them know what had\u00a0happened.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Maria describes life at the detention center&nbsp;as&nbsp;\u201cextremely difficult.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt&nbsp;isn\u2019t&nbsp;easy to survive in that place. Everything is very precarious,&nbsp;like&nbsp;the food, the way people are treated, the guards. There is a terrible sense of oppression for many&nbsp;different reasons. It is not easy to live under that kind of constant pressure and lack of freedom. I believe that for anyone who goes through it, being there for five months feels like five years,\u201d&nbsp;Maria said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/resurrectionproject.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Maria-Hands-Chair-Photo-1-683x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17144\" srcset=\"https:\/\/resurrectionproject.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Maria-Hands-Chair-Photo-1-683x1024.png 683w, https:\/\/resurrectionproject.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Maria-Hands-Chair-Photo-1-533x800.png 533w, https:\/\/resurrectionproject.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Maria-Hands-Chair-Photo-1-768x1152.png 768w, https:\/\/resurrectionproject.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Maria-Hands-Chair-Photo-1-1024x1536.png 1024w, https:\/\/resurrectionproject.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Maria-Hands-Chair-Photo-1-scaled.png 1366w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>\u00abMaria\u00bb sits down to share her story with The Resurrection Project.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Alone in detention and facing&nbsp;possible&nbsp;deportation, Maria\u2019s friend in Chicago was able to secure her&nbsp;help&nbsp;through TRP\u2019s Immigrant Justice&nbsp;Legal&nbsp;Clinic.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-medium-font-size\"><blockquote><p>\u201cI felt happy because honestly it was something&nbsp;very, very exciting&nbsp;to have someone there to support you, and it really&nbsp;isn\u2019t&nbsp;easy&nbsp;in&nbsp;detention. Like&nbsp;I\u2019m&nbsp;telling you, not everyone, unfortunately, even when they have lawyers, gets their support.\u00bb<\/p><cite>-\u00abMaria\u00bb<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Fighting for Maria\u2019s release was a joint effort by the Midwest Immigrant Defenders Alliance (MIDA), a network of&nbsp;organizations&nbsp;including TRP, the National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC), The Immigrant Project (TIP),&nbsp;and the Law Office of the Cook County Public Defender (CCPD).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fighting-for-maria-s-freedom\">Fighting for Maria&#8217;s Freedom<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In Maria\u2019s case, she had two lawyers: one from NIJC&#8217;s Habeas Project&nbsp;and the other from TRP, Alycia Jameson. Alycia recalls the difficulty of communicating with Maria while she was detained&nbsp;in Kentucky.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe detention center she was at allowed&nbsp;very limited&nbsp;calls. We could schedule a call for 30 minutes max, and you had to wait for that call to be over to try to schedule another one, which could be four days away. Then you need funds to make the phone calls.&nbsp;It&#8217;s&nbsp;so hard, and&nbsp;it&#8217;s&nbsp;designed that way,\u201d&nbsp;Alycia&nbsp;said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Maria\u2019s legal team&nbsp;submitted&nbsp;a motion to suppress evidence obtained during her arrest. The&nbsp;immigration&nbsp;judge agreed that her arrest had been egregious and&nbsp;terminated&nbsp;the proceedings against her.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/resurrectionproject.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/AlyciaJPG-1-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/resurrectionproject.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/AlyciaJPG-1-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/resurrectionproject.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/AlyciaJPG-1-533x800.jpg 533w, https:\/\/resurrectionproject.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/AlyciaJPG-1-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/resurrectionproject.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/AlyciaJPG-1-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/resurrectionproject.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/AlyciaJPG-1-scaled.jpg 1365w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>TRP attorney Alycia Jameson listens as her client \u00abMaria\u00bb shares her story. <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Maria should have been released following the termination of proceedings, but she&nbsp;was&nbsp;kept in detention.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">During this time, Maria recalls&nbsp;an escalation of mistreatment.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey put me in a cell for about three&nbsp;months,\u201d&nbsp;Maria&nbsp;recalled.&nbsp;\u00abThey&nbsp;isolated me.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Maria was&nbsp;isolated, but in Illinois, her attorneys were&nbsp;continuing to fight for her release.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt made the perfect moment to file habeas,\u201d&nbsp;Alycia explained.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">A petition for a writ of habeas corpus asks a federal judge to review why someone is being detained. In Maria\u2019s case, a federal judge reviewed her detention and questioned why she was still being held. The&nbsp;federal&nbsp;judge found that her due process rights had been violated and ordered her release.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-medium-font-size\"><blockquote><p>\u201cI was incredibly happy.&nbsp;It is very difficult for someone to be released from that place.&nbsp;I consider myself one of the few fortunate ones\u00bb&nbsp;<\/p><cite>-\u00abMaria\u00bb<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-journey-back-to-chicago\">The Journey Back to Chicago<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Maria was finally free, but she was far away from home. TRP worked with a&nbsp;local&nbsp;rapid response&nbsp;organization,&nbsp;Calor Humano,&nbsp;to transport&nbsp;Maria back home to Chicago.&nbsp;In addition to&nbsp;providing transportation,&nbsp;Calor Humano&nbsp;advocates for&nbsp;improving the poor conditions of detention centers and&nbsp;raises&nbsp;money&nbsp;for commissary and phone accounts. So far this year, Calor Humano has transported 29 people back home.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Calor Humano volunteer Reece and his son drove Maria home. Reece spoke what he described as \u201cbreak room&nbsp;Spanish,\u201d&nbsp;but he remembers finding ways to communicate with her.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe was mostly confused and disconnected,\u201d&nbsp;said Reece. \u201cBut she seemed to have a positive attitude and was incredibly grateful.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">For Reece, volunteering to transport Maria felt like \u201cthe right thing at the right time.\u201d His late father had lived in Chicago and was politically active.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was thinking about how much of my life, and his life, was about making others feel safe,\u201d Reece said. \u201cIt is an honor when you get that kind of opportunity.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Back in Chicago, Maria felt relieved, with a restored sense of safety and connection with her loved ones.&nbsp;For her, the best part of her release was reuniting with&nbsp;her&nbsp;family.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:0px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEven if not all of them are physically with me,&nbsp;it&nbsp;was very emotional. We stay in close contact, and just knowing that I am free, that I am not locked up anymore, is a huge relief,\u201d Maria&nbsp;said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Although a federal judge ordered her release, DHS filed a motion to reconsider the immigration judge\u2019s decision&nbsp;to&nbsp;terminate&nbsp;her proceedings.&nbsp;This resulted in her immigration case being reopened.&nbsp;Maria\u2019s lawyers were able to change the immigration court proceedings to Chicago. Her next hearing&nbsp;isn\u2019t&nbsp;until 2028.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Her lawyers filed a U-Visa application for her.&nbsp;Congress created the U-Visa to further law&nbsp;enforcement\u2019s&nbsp;objectives&nbsp;in securing&nbsp;assistance&nbsp;from immigrant victims of crime. An immigrant is eligible for a U-Visa if they&nbsp;assist&nbsp;law enforcement in the investigation of a crime.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Maria currently lives in a women\u2019s shelter and, despite everything she has endured, she&nbsp;remains&nbsp;determined to keep working hard for herself and her family.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow that I am out, I hope to move forward and build a better future. My dream is to have my own cleaning company one day,\u201d Maria&nbsp;said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Maria\u2019s story is a reminder that no one facing detention should have to endure it alone. In her darkest moments, organizations in Illinois and Kentucky fought for her release and helped bring her home safely.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">There are others in ICE detention\u00a0still waiting for that same chance.
