Ashley Carreon

ashley_carreon Ashley Carreon was looking for an immersive summer program.

She had completed her junior year of high school in the summer of 2015, and was eager to find a summer opportunity that would take her away from her Little Village home.

She was an outstanding student and captain of the high school soccer team at Chicago Bulls College Prep in the Near West Side.

Her mom, Lupita Carreon, a Parent Mentor coordinator at Orozco Community Academy in Pilsen, had heard about the One Summer Chicago program, and referred Ashley to apply. She was accepted to the program and was joyful to learn that she had been placed at TRP. That summer, Ashley was involved in building a peaceful neighborhood through The Resurrection Basketball League and peace mosaic mural at Throop Park in the Pilsen community.

Over the summer, it grew clear to TRP staff that Ashley had the skills to be a strong community leader. As a result, TRP nominated Ashley for the 2016 Bank of America Students Leaders Program and to become a Peace Builder with The Peace Exchange, a non-violence leadership development program. Ashley was thrilled when she was accepted to both programs.

TRP cultivated Ashley’s desire to be immersed in the community and consequently supported her with her “communication skills and finding direction to what I want to do in my life.”

Because of the support and experiences that Ashley had with TRP, she frequently visited TRP’s La Casa Resource Center where she met with staff who helped her with her college decision. This fall, Ashley started as a freshman at University of Urbana-Champaign and is currently working for a non-profit organization in Urbana-Champaign.

“I didn’t think about the community as much as I do now. It used to be all about soccer and school. I’m now looking for opportunities to be a part of similar programs that I’ve been involved with in the past.”
